Two weeks ago I received an inspiring e-mail from a fledging trader who felt lost because he had never traded in a downtrending market. He’d lost some money, but rather than giving up, he told me he resolved to figure this market out. This got me pumped because flight is not in his nature, he’s a fighter. It was then I decided I needed to do a webinar on trading bear markets.

Apparently this kid wasn’t the only trader who needed direction trading this market, because the response to last Tuesday’s webinar was HUGE! I received so many great questions that I could not get to all of them. So here is a follow up Q&A session answering all of your unanswered questions:

In case you missed it, here is a replay of the full one hour webinar “Swing Trading in a Bear Market”.

Man oh man, the parabolic short setup is a great setup for aggressive swing traders. It is one of my most profitable swing trade setups. It’s fast, sexy and fun to trade. What other setup can give you 15-25 percent gains in a day or two? Even if you are trading a momentum stock like GOOGL or NFLX you are probably waiting at least a month for these kinds of gains.

While it is uber-profitable, it’s also one of the riskiest trades out there. You MUST know how to trade the setup and protect yourself. In this video I use my most recent parabolic short trade (RUN), to give you a primer on the setup. This is the first in a series of posts on the parabolic short setup.

A winning trader should make money in any trading environment, and never use “the market” as an excuse. That’s what losing traders do. To be successful in tough markets, you have to know how to adjust, what setups to trade, when to scale back and when to hit the gas.

After the recent August 24th market selloff, I laid out a plan for trading the market in this webinar with Kunal. We have used these strategies in the Report to successfully trade in a market many hedge fund managers and retail traders are bitching about. Not us. We have adjusted and winning. Even better, these strategies are perfect for part-time traders.

This video reviews my last 4 trades completed in October. I’ve made a total of $3171 off 3 wins and one loss. The average win is $1268 and the loss is $634. That’s the kind of reward to risk ratio I aim for (Note this does not include the partial profits from two trades, each of which is currently a bigger win than the $3171 from these 4 trades). We also review the market, my recent entries and open positions.

Swing traders are always on the lookout for momentum stocks that make explosive moves in a short period of time.  The breakout breakaway gap setup is by far the best setup for swing traders looking for explosive price action. It is also great for part-time traders who don’t have time to day trade.

There are 4 elements to the breakout breakaway gap setup:

1) a breakout from a developed range

2) a big gap from that range

3) high volume relative to previous volume (at least 2-3 average volume)

4) the breakout is on tangible news such as earnings, rather than rumors and speculation.

In this video we go over $GOOGL to illustrate the power of the breakout breakaway gap setup.

Now that you have watched the video, find some breakout breakaway gap examples in momentum stocks that made explosive moves and share them in the comments below.

This is part 3 in the trading breakouts series  “The only setup you need to know”.

Quick Summary:

Looking for SPY to break key levels.  Video analysis of 20 focus list stocks, with annotations of 6 to key in on: BIDU, MNST, Z, VEEV, VRNS and GWPH. On Friday entered GWPH and still holding SPXU.

Video Analysis:

Analysis of 20 Focus List stocks to start the week, all in 5 minutes.

Key SPY Pivot Levels: Old high 199,  50 dam 196.61, 197.50 gap fill and support level

SPY 8-30-14

Under the Hood and Trading Game Plan:

With any sign of weakness being bought, SPY continues to consolidate overbought conditions rather than pullback.  We continue to watch for a pullback and breakout of both the $200 (round number) and $199 (old high).  If that happens, a pullback to the 50 dma will be in play.

The current game plan is to manage the SPY short position.  I continue to look for long setups on momo stocks, but will not chase. Biotech continues to be the sector of interest. Oil/gas is also picking up.

Current Trades

I am still holding SPY short via SPXU.

On friday I entered focus list stock GWPH on pullback to the 50 dma.  The setup is still available. Stop is in the $87-88 range, target $100 (breakout gap) or $110 (high).

GWPH 8-30-14

The Focus List

Finviz link to easily follow the entire focus list.

There are 20 stocks of interest from my watch list  to start the week.  Today’s video goes over all of them.  Below are a few to key in on.

BIDU is at the bottom of it’s post earnings breakout range.  Entry in the $210-212 range.  Target $225-230.  Stop $204-205 gives a minimum 3:1 reward to risk ratio.

BIDU 8-30

MNST forming a “rounded” pullback post breakout similar to our recent TWTR trade.  Entry in the $86-87 range.  Target $95.  Stop under $85.

MNST 8-30-14

VEEV broke out strong over a 2 month long range on very strong volume.  Entry on pullback to either the 2oo day moving average or the bottom of the breakout bar.  See video for 1/2 position strategy.

VEEV 8-30

VRNS showing accumulation within a bottoming formation and has remounted the 50 dma.   Entry on pullback here or deeper pullback to bottom of breakout bar.  See video for 1/2 position strategy.

vrns 8-30

Z continues to digest the huge breakout and is pulling back to the rising moving average.  Entry in the $139-141 range.  Stop around $135 and target at $160 offers great reward to risk.

Z 8-30-14

Short Setups:

My focus now is shorting SPY via SPXU

Market Leaders

TSLA broke out to new highs.  It is one to watch.  Z is setting up as a pullback play.  AMZN continues to work at filling the gap at $360.  NFLX bounced right at pullback to old high.  All four can be considered focus list stocks.

Quick Summary:

SPY analysis.  TWTR exit.  3 new focus list stocks: GOOGL, MNST and PRTA.  Market leaders AMZN, FB and TSLA all near entry levels on pullback.

Video Analysis (3 minutes):

Intra-day video goes over TWTR exit and SPY.

Key SPY Pivot Levels: Old high 199,  50 dam 196.28, 197.50 gap fill and support level

SPY 8-26-14

Under the Hood and Trading Game Plan:

SPY did nothing today, which is how most individual stocks reacted as well.  I would say this up move could be running out of steam, but there really hasn’t been much steam pushing it to begin with.  The analysis stays the same.  Key levels to watch if the old high at $199 is violated are $197.50 and $196.28.  This second moving average support would provide good entry for individual stocks we are watching.

The current game plan is to manage the SPY short position.  I continue to look for long setups on momo stocks, but will not chase.

Current Trades

I exited TWTR for a gain today.  I am still holding SPXU.

I am playing the stop by “feel”.  If I had to give a stop for SPXU, for those who can’t watch or are working, I would likely make it around $43.  There is no resistance since we are in new highs, so this is based solely on the projected target of $46-47 and getting 2:1 on the trade.  This should be combined with not risking more than 1 percent of your account.

The Trade Journal is updated.

The Focus List

Finviz link to easily follow the focus list.

Focus list stocks KORS, BIDU, UNTD are near entry levels.

Focus List 8-26-14

New Additions:

GOOGL does not have a great volume pattern, but it is pulling back nicely to the 50 dma.  Entry $586-589.  Stop $579.    Target $600-610.

Don’t be scared off by the “high price” of GOOGL.  Focus on percentage gain, not points.

GOOGL 8-26-14

MNST broke out strong with a huge gap and now has the start of that rounded pullback pattern we saw in TWTR.  These are always tough because the big gap and lack of support levels makes it tough to find a clear pullback zone.  Entry here with stop $84-85.  Target $94-95.

MNST 8-26-14

PRTA is a biotech stock that is showing signs of challenging recent highs around $25.  I will look for a pullback entry around $22-22.25 with a sot at $21 and target $25.

PRTA 8-26-14

Short Setups:

My focus now is shorting SPY via SPXU

Market Leaders

AMZN is showing signs of life and I may look for a good entry level.  Z is still a pullback candidate, as is FB and TSLA.

Market Leaders 8-26-14

My favorite setup for part-time trading is the breakout-pullback setup.  It is the bread and butter setup for swing traders who can not follow every tick in the market.  While it is a simple setup, there are a number of variations of the setup that need to be understood.  The variation we are discussing today is what I call the “breakout-remount”.

Three steps are necessary for the breakout-remount:

1.  A strong breakout clearing resistance with strong price and volume action.

2.  A breakout failure, with price violating the bottom of the breakout bar, former resistance and a moving average (20, 50 or 200 day moving average)

3.  A remount of the moving average on strong volume.

This setup often leads to powerful moves as the initial “weak” entrants are shaken out of the trade.  In this two-minute video I go over the breakout-remount setup using the recent breakout-remount setup in $NFLX.

Now that you have watched the video, find some “breakout-remount” setups and post them in the comments below, and I will give you my feedback.  New readers can review Part 1 of the series, the breakout-pullback setup.
